From: Elfin Tyusis on 4 Jul 2010 10:09 I recall that the Roman Empire lasted about 450 years, so the U.S. still has 150 to get used to its decline. That's about the time it'll take for economic global leveling to raise 200 or so countries up to our current levels of economic, social and cultural quality. As for the U.S., it's seen its best days. Sooner-but-probably-later, U.S. citizens will need to accept that: 1) Unchecked population growth will continue to exacerbate our disintegration to a nationwide condition, "TOO BIG TO SUCCEED". 2) Our intractable political divisions will continue to make future challenges nearly- or practically-insoluble until, or unless, our failed two-party system is diluted and tempered by authoritarian leadership. Since none of the foregoing is likely to happen in time to slow or halt our slide, and since we won't be around in 150 years, what are your predictions as to what form the "barbarians-at-the-gates" will take? -------------- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/03/AR2010070302707.html |
