No point in cancelling the initial bid if there were already higher bids
from other buyers.

Are you sure?
If an item starts at �10 , bidder A bids �20 and bidder B bids �30....

Wouldn't the highest bid drop back to �10?

Yes, which is why the decent thing to do is cancel the blocked bidder's bid.

Your example cites 2 different bidders so presumably you mean A is the
"banned" bidder so your scenario is correct but might there not be
more than 2 bids in the particular case cited by the OP. ...I'm not
sure how removing the banned bidders bids would affect the remaining
bids in that case ...would they not just stay as they are as
presumably that's what the bidders were preared to pay .
