Wrong. They are three different companies under the umbrella of the

Thanks for all the replies - it's via Parcelforce so I guess that I'm
just unlucky that they checked it this time... So what happens now? Do
they base the Custom's charges on the amount stated on the Customs
form on the box, or do they open it and take a guess?

Oh, and they've had this nearly a week now and I'm still waiting for a
letter from them :(

It will be 17.5 percent of the sum of (total declared PLUS the postage
cost). Then they add the fee.

I have just received a parcel from the US. Posted 24/3 (PA), arrived
Chicago 25/3, arrived UK 30/3, delivered to me 08/04. Note the UK leg
of the journey takes longer than Pennsylvania to UK, via Chicago. Makes
you weep.
