Thanks to all respondants.

I contacted the guy twice by email requesting refund of goods + postage. On
getting no reply I raised the matter with Ebay an received a full refund
from the buyer within the hour without request to return goods.

Sounds like you've been granted a 'no fault' refund by eBay.

The seller gets to keep your money. It's other sellers, the fee payers,
that have refunded you.

The refund was actually from the seller himself, along with a request that I
"please don't leave negative feedback or low DSR rating".
