How to avoid ice-clogged furnace air intake pipe?
Once or twice each winter, my furnace shuts down due to a clogged air intake pipe. The pipe clogs in subzero weather or during/after a blizzard, presumably because of snow/ice building up inside the pipe (said the repair guy after traveling out in a blizzard on Sunday morning the first time it happened). If I dis... 12 Feb 2010 22:32
Broken lateral sewer line
The lateral sewer line from my house to the street clogs about once a year, in spite of my putting drain cleaner in regularly. The guy who cleaned it out last time said the line is broken. The town says it's my responsibility. It would be several thousand dollars to dig up and repair the line. I've heard on... 2 Feb 2010 20:49

Buy major appliances online?
I've decided to replace my 50-year-old electric coil range with a nice smoothtop (GE's JB700DN). It looks like I can save $30-60 by buying from an online retailer like AJMadison versus the local Lowe's and Sears, but is it a good idea? Are there any non-obvious pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanks! -... 2 Feb 2010 20:49
Panasonic Microwave oven died in 2.5 years
Hello, I had a Panasonic NN-T995 microwave oven bought in July 2007 die suddenly. I checked the power line terminals and found the circuit open. I have replaced a fuse to fix a Microwave I used to have but the screws on the panasonic are hexagonal socket screws that do not seem to fit any of the hexagonal socket... 26 Jan 2010 01:11
CFL Failure
I have a total of 120 CFL's installed, from 2 in bath #5 to 22 in the library. There have been 2 failures in over 7 years. One in basement that is on 24/7 and the other in the master bath that cycles probably 6-8 times per day. I have 35 of the 23W installed and 85 of the 13W. The 13W figure includes the bug light... 19 Jan 2010 11:21
Self-Mover Truck Tips
Self-Mover Truck Tips "The Jeffersons" made its TV debut this day in 1975, with George and Wheezy movin' to the East Side. Today, thanks to low interest rates and a wacky economy, lots of people are moving -- some up, others not so. Are you one of the many renting a truck and moving to a new home? If so, it pays... 18 Jan 2010 10:58
