In the end it went for a decent price, so was very happy to not have the
hassle of couriers, i.e. the extra it could possibly have gone for would
probably have been gobbled up in paypal fees

How so? Does PayPal charge 100% commission on amounts that exceed a
certain figure?

3.25% on top of final value + shpping cost for said item is quite a
surcharge IMO
