I presume you mean the buyer. He cannot have closed his account, that takes
six months. EBay/PayPal will have done it for him. It sounds as though he
was using a stolen funding source. You're stuffed, basically.

It was the Ebay account that was closed, not the Paypal one.

Anyway, I've just got a result. Decided to inform them I was going to go
the route here:

http://www.ukauctionhelp.co.uk/ppchargeback.php

Phoned them up and was passed to the department that deals with it. When
the guy on the phone answered and gave me his name, I asked for his
surname. He said they don't give that out and I said I was asking
because depending on the outcome, I was either going to take the
customer to court if he didn't send me the goods or the money or Paypal
to the FSA. We went on a little about proof of delivery to which I said
I had positive feedback which will be proof enough to any judge.

Cue 100% backtracking, lots of politeness and apologies and a "courtesy
payment" of the amount. The CS guy said that he understood it wasn't
about the money amount but the principle. I guess he worked that out by
the fact I was pursuing 3. Somehow I have a feeling this is something
they decided to do off their own bat, rather than it being because of a
fraudulent transaction.

Yeah its only 3 but its MY 3 and if they do it to 100,000 people a
day, which isn't beyond the realms of possibility with tens of millions
of users, that's 300,000 they either generate for themselves and/or
earn interest on for 30 days.

Well I'm amending the ad and adding the cost of recorded delivery to the
auction now and telling everyone why. The more bad press Paypal get, the
more they'll realise that they can't just do what they please.

Legend has it you can sometimes hear the Paypal rep's sphincter squeak down
the phone when you mention 'FSA'. ;o)
