I see tonight that the bidder list has changed form Bidder1, Bidder2
etc to d***7, z***0 and suchlike. I suppose this gives a little more
transparency and protection from shilling, I wonder why they did it,
was there an announcement somewhere?

Makes no difference what so ever, I imagine Ebay (correcntly) assumed that
the vast majority of people would be able to recognise a cosmetic change
from one anonymous display to another without getting in a tizzy about it
and didn't think such a minor amendment warranted an announcement.

It was like that before it went to Bidder 1/Bidder 2 etc.

They did it because people like me accused ebay of allowing shill
bidding in order to increase their profits - they also allowed 2nd
chance bids on accounts they knew had the same bidders. I was one
of many that complaned and it has paid off - they listened.

Actually it does. If you go to item 130364626110 you'll see the first
bid is from me. There's no indication of the number of characters
represented by the stars, but the first and last characters are
correct.
