Boxes for Sony A/V equipment always have a square with a number
underlined by two lines. What does the number mean? It's not weight,
because my Trinitron box has a 5 and it weighs tons, but the box for a
boombox as a 12.

Likely something to do with the config of the pallets of them etc.

It's stacking height - how many of those boxes can be safely stacked on
top of one another.
