If you've a valid credit card that can be used for back up funding, then
PayPal defaults to so-called "instant" payment. It's only an echeque if
there's no cc or the cc has expired.

You're quite right though: the only way to explicitly pay with a credit card
is to choose additional funding methods.

You've still paid with paypal, they've probably just changed the default, to
e-cheque, next time you pay for something just look at other payment options
and you should be able to choose payment by card. I haven't used paypal for
a while, but I'm sure you used to be able to change it back to using your
card by default. I'm not sure from you post and the replies if you know what
an e-cheque is. Just in case it is where paypal don't take the money from
your card (debit/credit) but do a sort of direct debit from your bank
account to themselves and then send it on to the seller, the downside is
that they sit on the money for a few days (on top of the already slow
payment) just to make a bit of extra interest.
